Apostates departed for a counterfeit Christianity because they were never born again and sealed with the Spirit. A. The greatest threat to the Christian faith is false teaching that arises within the church.  Satan initiates apostasy as an effective weapon to attack the Christian faith.II. Every Christian’s Responsibility - Contend for the faith is a present tense imperative, which means it is an ongoing command for all believers. A. Jude exhorts us to respond with positive determination! We are in a battle against Satan for the souls of men.B. Those entrusted with the truth must engage in battle and fight passionately for it. This rules out apathy, indifference or laziness. C.  We need to have the same attitude as Paul who wrote: “we did not yield in submission [to the opposition] even for a moment, so that the truth of the Gospel might be preserved for you (Gal. 2:3-5).                                    III. The Faith - The body of objective truth from God’s Word that is related to our common salvation, to which nothing can be added, from which nothing may be taken away, in which nothing may be altered. The Gospel must remain pure.A. It is about one person: the eternal Son of God incarnate, His virgin  birth and His perfect life.B. It is about two events: the perfect, sufficient and finished sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ and His resurrection from the dead.C. It is about one response unto salvation: repentance and faith  (Mark 1:15). No other response is biblical.IV.  Once for all Delivered to the Saints - The faith was signed, sealed and delivered 2000 years ago and fixed for all time. No other revelation or “word from God” can supersede it or supplement it. A. It was delivered to the saints. not to church leaders so they could interpret it for you.B. There are no more prophets, no more revelations, no more Words from God. We must lovingly rebuke anyone who goes beyond what is written (1 Cor. 4:6).V.  What is at Stake if We Don’t Contend for the Faith? The glory, honor and name of Jesus Christ, the purity of the Gospel (Gal. 1:6-9) and the unity of “the faith” (Eph. 4:13).A. Paul gave us every reason to keep the Gospel pure when he condemned the Judaizers for perverting it.B. Those who embrace the true faith must remain sanctified by the truth and not be united with unbelievers. VI.  Identifying Apostates in the Church - They come in under the radar by entering secretly, then gain status and teach false doctrine. “Paul described such men as “false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ” (2 Cor. 11:13). A. Unless marked and exposed they will continue to deceive, confuse  and divide the assembly.B. They refuse to submit to Jesus as Master and sovereign Lord.C. They profess to know God, but deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for any good work (Titus 1:16).  D. Their perversion in practice is accompanied by a perversion in doctrine. They are enemies of the cross and their god is their belly.  VII. Four Steps into Apostasy - The departure from the faith occurs from a gradual erosion of biblical truth and practice over a period of time.A. First Step1. God’s word is neglected as the supreme authority.2. Religious traditions cause confusion and divided loyalties. 3. Evangelism is corrupted by unbiblical methods. 4. The power and purity of the Gospel is compromised5. People are given what they want instead of what they need.B. Second Step  1. Scripture is twisted for man’s self-serving agendas.2. Biblical ignorance provides fertile soil for false teachers.3. Satan sows his tares with no resistance.4. God is honored with lips but hearts are far from Him.5. Legalism and religious bondage trumps sound doctrine.6. Worship is replaced by entertainmentC.Third Step1. Religious pride blinds people from the light of the Gospel.2. Truth becomes subjective and hearts are hardened.3. Love for God grows cold.4. A form of godliness exists but it’s void of the Gospel’s power.5. Biblical warnings to expose false teachers are ignored,    6. Doctrinal error is embraced and discernment is dying.     7. Sin and immoral lifestyles are tolerated.D. Fourth Step1. The church's lamp stand has been removed2. Doctrines of demons are taught and deception is full-blown.3. Jesus has been pushed outside the church.4. Lying signs and wonders are said to be messages from God.5. Idolatry and prayers to the dead are encouraged.6. Grace is turned into a license to sin. VII. Top Ten Attacks We Must Contend Against1. Roman Catholicism2. Ecumenical Unity3. Evolution4. Mysticism and contemplative prayer5. NAR, prosperity gospels, “healings,” and “a word from God”6. Compromised gospels from seeker friendly, purpose-driven and emerging churches7. Myths of people going to heaven and hell and back8. Heretical books that lead people astray9. Psycho-babel, yoga,12-step programs10. The growing influence of the cults VIII.  How Do We Contend?A. Use the authority of God’s Word as your objective standard for truth and discernmentB. Speak the truth in love as you confront those who are in errorC. Never let a lie of the devil go unabatedD. Make sure your motivation is for the glory of God, the sanctity of His church and the purity of His Gospel. E. Be bold, courageous and passionate in defense of the GospelIX. Closing Exhortations A. Avoid those who oppose sound doctrine (Rom. 16:17).B. Remain sanctified by the truth (John 17:17); and avoid being unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Cor. 6:14-17).C. Expose false teachers and their evil deeds (Eph. 5:11).D. Fight against apostasy even if it means standing alone.E.  Abide in the Word faithfully and study it systematically to learn and defend the whole counsel of God (John 8:31-32).  Notes:            Ten Shekels and a ShirtJudges 17-18Jesse Johnson Paris Reidhead was a missionary to Sudan/Ethiopia in the 1940’s. He returned hope to the United States to take a position of leadership with the Christian Missionary Alliance. In 1960, at age 41, he preached a midweek sermon to a group of missionary leaders on Judges 17 titled Ten Shekels and a Shirt. His sermon was essentially a warning against the drift toward pragmatism that he saw infiltrating the American church (He preached the same message again 21 years later—largely because he felt frustrated that his warnings were going unheeded).Paris died in 1992, and so he missed what happened to that message—with the advent of the internet, the sermon went on-line, and has since become one of  the most downloaded sermons of all-time.This sermon below contains my own study, but much of it is from Paris. My goal is to take what Reidhead warned about in the 1960’s, and then preached against in the 1980’s, and show how those same trends are prevalent today.  Paris’s warnings two generations ago deserve a prominent spot in the formation of our world view today. If we ignore what he said, we risk selling our own faith for nothing more than ten shekels and a shirt.Lessons from the book of Judges:1. Compromise corrupts, and a little compromise corrupts absolutely2. Danger is internal, judgment is external3. The mirage of moral intuitionHow to be a liberal “believer”:1. Be ignorant of Scripture2. Worship like the world3. Reject the standard“And it will be, like people, like priest.” (Hosea 4:9)THE DEFINING QUESTION as you look at worship: Is God an end or a means?Evangelical Christianity today can often be marked by seeing God as a means—which leads to pragmatism.Pragmatism: If it works, its trueEvolution: If it lasts, its trueHumanism: if it makes man happy, its trueIn American history, the combination of evolutionary thinking and humanism led to cultural lawlessness. The church had two opposite ways of responding to this:1. Liberalism—which would make man happy while alive, and says nothing about death2. Fundamentalism—which offered to make man happy in death (but not in life—ha!)Both are errors—both have happiness as their goal. So contrast humanism/pragmatism with biblical theology: Is the end of all being the happiness of man, or the glory of God?” It's not what you're going to get out of god, it's what's he going to get out of you.    Notes:          When Your Enemy is Your NeighborLuke 12:49-59Jesse Johnson “What we suffer from now is humility in the wrong place. It has moved from the organ of ambition and settled on the organ of conviction. A man was meant to be doubtful about himself and undoubting about the truth.”  --GK Chesterton, Orthodoxy1. The a world of tolerance: TRUTH CLAIMS ARE EXILED2. In a world without truth—THE GOSPEL IS DESIGNED TO DIVIDE3. In a world with division: THE GOSPEL IS VERIFIED AS TRUTHThe more the world opposes God’s people, the more the gospel divides, the more truth is evident. Thus, the wisdom of God is seen in the persecution of the church“You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.'  “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” Matthew 5:43-44Many Americans are used to a culture where the commands to love our enemies and love our neighbors were two separate commands. But with persecution, those two commands become one.4. In a world where truth fuels division: THE GOSPEL ALONE BRINGS PEACEThus, the biggest danger Christians face is viewing the mission field as our enemies   Notes:  Escaping Mysticism’s Stranglehold on EvangelicalismBy Mike Abendroth Session 1 (part 1)  1.     Believe the Scriptures are __________.  (2 Tim. 3:15-17) 2.     Believe the Scriptures are ___________.  (Psa. 19:7 ff.) 3.     Believe that the highest form of ___________ with God is through His _________.  (1 John 4:7-12)  Session 2 (part 2) 4.     Believe that the Bible is more sure than _____________.  (2 Peter 1:16-21) 5.     Believe you can make ___________ without “signs.” a.     W___________b.     W___________c.     W___________d.     W___________e.     W___________ 6.     Believe God wants you to use your ________. 7. Believe that God’s ordained means of _____________ to Christ is through the ____________.  (1 Peter 2:1-3)      Notes:          Lies in the TextbooksUsama Dakdok "If you tell a -------- big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it…the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie…”Joseph Goebbels, Propaganda Minister under Adolf HitlerWhat the Qur’an teaches about LYINGIt is not sinful to deny the faithQur'an16:106Whoever becomes an infidel in Allah after he believed, except one who was _____________ and his heart is ______________________________, but whoever opens his chest to the infidelity, the wrath of Allah will be on them, and they will have great torment. It is not sinful to lie in swearingQur'an 2:225Allah will not hold you responsible for your mere ___________________ in an oath, but he will hold you responsible for that which your hearts gained.
